(the National Enquirer, the newest bastion of accurate reporting, claims that Sarah Palin had an affair with her husband's business partner. The following is McCain's campaign's response)
"The smearing of the Palin family must end. The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov. Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie," said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. "The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it."
(other quotes from John McCain himself concerning respecting Pain's family's privacy follow)
–“This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children’s privacy.”
–“The media should respect Bristol’s privacy. That’s always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.”...
–“The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight.”
(and now for the coup d'hypocrite)
From a John McCain speech during a Republican Dinner in June 1998 published in the June 25, 1998 version of Salon:
"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."
